Act your age: How to get the perfect blend of home and garden

Apart from selecting appropriate plants, it is important to include suitable design features. A rigidly formal structure would be inappropriate outside a romantic thatched cottage but is suited to a Georgian townhouse. Many gardens of this time consisted of borders filled with shrubs that ran around the entire space, edged by low box hedging.

Square or oval lawns reached by gravel paths, trellis screens and circular beds planted with specimen shrubs will complete the look. Victorian front gardens were usually simple, featuring a tiled path with roperoll edging and a small lawn dotted with a shrub, or possibly a small parterre with compartments filled with brightly coloured bedding plants.

Large-scale parterres of clipped box or lavender were often created in larger back gardens. Less formal beds were sited
further from the house.
